Only a few miles east of Sealy Street RV Park on US-80, Monahans Sandhills State Park is one of the most surprising natural attractions in all of Texas. Massive white sand dunes rise out of the flat West Texas desert, creating a landscape that feels more like a beach than a state park. Whether you're visiting for a day or staying for a month, the sandhills are a must-do — and they look completely different at sunrise, midday, and sunset.

What to Do at Monahans Sandhills State Park

  • Sand sledding — rent a sand disc at the park office and send it down the dunes. Kids (and adults) love it.

  • Hiking — no designated trails means you can explore anywhere. Bring plenty of water, especially in summer.

  • Stargazing — minimal light pollution makes the sandhills one of the best stargazing spots in West Texas.

  • Horseback riding — the park has an 800-acre equestrian area for those bringing horses.

  • Wildlife watching — the visitor center has a wildlife viewing area where you can spot desert animals up close.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and fall are the sweet spots — temperatures are comfortable and the wind creates beautifully sculpted dune shapes. Summer visits are possible but require very early morning starts (before 9am) to beat the heat. Winters are mild but windy. The park is open year-round.

Tips Before You Go

  • Bring at least one gallon of water per person — the Texas sun is unforgiving

  • Wear closed-toe shoes — sand gets extremely hot by midday

  • Dogs are allowed on a leash — they love the dunes too

  • A Texas State Parks pass saves money if you're staying multiple weeks

Staying at Sealy Street RV Park puts you just minutes from the park entrance — close enough to catch both the sunrise AND the sunset over the dunes on the same day. Book your site at (432) 943-2077.
